Kythira Wind Turbines Information

Plan to install small wind park in Kythira rejected

The Enchorios (Committee for the Domestic Property of Kythera and Antikythera) decided on 30 November 2020 not to lease land in the areas of Kypriotianika and Skliri, for the installation of a small park of 6 wind turbines (each about 50 meters high).

This plan has nothing to do with the proposed plans for 110 large wind turbines on Kythira. In this case the plan for the park is based on a recent law that makes it very easy to create small-scale energy parks via a simplified process. The request for the lease was submitted by the company Light Energy – Energy Community, from Nafplion.

The reason for the rejection of the request as stated in the decision is that “in the requested area there are properties of citizens, as the human activities of earlier times are obvious”. The decision also refers to the mayor’s response to the committee as well as the Office of Antiquities of Piraeus and Islands and the management of PEHO A.D. Attica, which urges it not to make these leases, citing the violation of the natural and structured environment of the area and visual disturbance in declared monuments and archeological sites protected by archaeological legislation.
