Study: wind turbines cause more warming

A study by Harvard and indeed from 2018, has been published in the scientific journal Joule and shows that wind turbines cause significant changes in the temperatures around them, dramatically increasing the surface temperature in the areas where they are located. Large wind turbines in particular cause local increases in the temperature of the Earth’s surface, with the heat mixing in parts of the atmosphere and affecting the surrounding space.

According to the study, wind turbines between 100-150 meters, operating at night, can draw warmer air up to 550 meters in height, pushing it to the surface below them, warming the Earth’s soil. This affects people, plants and animals that live near them.

The study was done to examine the effects if the US produced all its energy from wind turbines. It showed that the mixing of warmer air with cooler, due to the turbines, would raise the temperature by 0.54 degrees Celsius, in the areas where the wind turbines would be located. In some of the areas they saw that the increase would be even greater, as we see in the image below. Southwest Minnesota, for example, could see an increase of up to 0.8 degrees Celsius due to wind turbines.
