Court hearing 18 October 2024
On October 18th, 2024, the Athens Court of Appeals will hear applications to cancel permits for industrial wind turbines within Kythira’s Natura 2000 network. These permits, issued to TERNA ENERGY, concern areas in Kordellides (above Routsouna beach) and Xerokambia (west of Petrouni), along with a site near Phoinikies, 700 meters from the Natura 2000 zone.
The proposed projects, totaling 132 megawatts and involving massive wind turbines (120-250m tall), have faced strong opposition from Kytherian citizens, associations, the Municipality, and the Domestic Property Committee, who argue that the turbines pose a significant threat to the island’s protected ecosystems and its vital role as a migratory bird corridor.
A recent Special Environmental Study (SES) for the Natura 2000 regions of Kythira and Antikythira, commissioned after a 2020 European Court conviction against Greece, confirms these concerns. The SES highlights the island’s critical importance as a migration route for millions of birds and declares industrial wind turbines incompatible with the area’s environmental value.
While the outcome of the court case remains uncertain, many believe these projects will ultimately be withdrawn, similar to five other wind turbine projects by ELLAKTOR and KOPELOUZOS groups that were recently canceled.
The legal challenge is supported by the Kythiraikos Institute for Culture and Development (KIPA), which has established a dedicated account for donations to cover legal costs. To contribute to this effort and protect Kythira’s natural heritage, donations can be made to the following account:
