German wind turbines kill 1,2 million kilo of insects per year

Recent research by the German Centre for Air- and Spacetravel calculates that about 1.2 million kilo of insects are killed each year by the rotorblades of Windturbines. Residues of flying insects have been reported over three decades to be found on the rotorblades of turbines in different countries and regions.

Next to killing an uncountable number of insects, deposits of insects on the blades can also reduce the efficiency of wind power generation. For this reason the blades are regularly cleaned, if rainfall is not sufficient to achieve that.
