Kythera – an island that must no be lost
Post by the Movement for the protection of small islands:
Kythera, with its rich natural and cultural heritage, is once again in the crosshairs of the wind industry. The company TERNA ENERGY has moved to the next stage of planning, submitting an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) for the construction of 30 wind turbines with a total capacity of 135 MW at the locations “Karvounos – Foinikies” (31.5 MW), “Kordelides” (54 MW), and “Xerokampia” (49.5 MW). These are wind turbines 150 meters high, visible from every corner of the island, which will require the opening of dozens of kilometers of new roads and the destruction of pristine natural ecosystems.
An island with global ecological significance.
Kythera is not just a tourist destination. It is one of the most important migratory corridors for millions of birds crossing the Mediterranean. According to the Special Environmental Study (SES) of 2024, energy production from industrial wind farms is completely incompatible with the ecological value of the island, as it poses an immediate threat to rare and protected species of birds of prey, of which 35 out of the 45 recorded species in Europe have been observed here during migration periods.
Monuments and cultural heritage at risk
The island of Kythera is not just a natural landscape but also a place full of history, tradition, and cultural value. The destruction of these landscapes will irreparably damage the aesthetic and cultural heritage of Kythera, affecting its unique identity.
Resistance now – Before it’s too late!
The EIS is now posted on the Electronic Environmental Registry, and public consultation ends on July 9, 2025. If we want to safeguard the future of this unique island, we must act now.
Let’s participate in the consultation, inform our fellow citizens, and raise our voices to save Kythera!
