A Byzantine monument of exceptional interest on the island is SAINT GEORGE in the Douriánika area, at the location KROTIRIO. From the monumental publication of the Academy of Athens ‘INDEX OF BYZANTINE WALL PAINTINGS OF KYTHIRA’ we learn that THE CHURCH WAS BUILT IN 1275 by the priest Ioannikios, under Metropolitan Gregory of Monemvasia. The year 1275 is crucial for the history of Kythira, because that year the Monemvasians had expelled the Venetians from Kythira and thus the church of Kythira had returned to the jurisdiction of the Metropolitan of Monemvasia who hastened to confirm the event with the founding of the church.
