Report meeting 11 May and how to formally object
A report by Kythira Green on the joint meeting between Dynamo Kythira and KIPA regarding the current situation with the planned wind parks on Kythira, held on May 11, 2025.
After all the smaller bidders for a share in potential windfarms on Kythera were eliminated or bought out, including the Kopelouzos Group and Ellaktor SA, the last man standing was the Terna Energy Group. Terna, 100% of which was very recently acquired by Abu Dhabi energy company Masdar, is bidding for three large sites in the north of the island. These are now being packaged as a single bid, with a total target output of 135MW (megawatts). The next stage in the process is for the bidder to prepare and submit a formal Environmental Impact Study, which Terna/Masdar have now done. There remain exactly 56 days in which interested parties, groups and organisations, including of course private citizens, can post their response and criticism on the Ministry of the Environment site at https://eprm.ypen.gr/src/App/w1/2218. Should their Impact Study (EIS) be accepted, they will be free to proceed to the next step in implementing their bid.
To avert this, it is essential that as many objections as possible be formally registered. During yesterday’s meeting, it was proposed that Dynamo Kythira and KIPA, in consultation with specialist legal advice, draw up a concise document outlining all the reasons why Terna/Masdar’s EIS should be rejected. As many individuals and groups as possible will be invited to co-sign this document, which will then be posted on the consultation site; it is crucially important to ensure the widest possible participation. To facilitate the process of signing on, all that is required is to send an email to d11kythira@gmail.com with your name, surname, father’s name and address. Please ensure you include your father’s name in the email. Your objection cannot be processed without this information.Note that no signature or official form of identification is required, as this will not be a legal document.
Kythera Green will of course be a signatory party to the group document, and in addition we will be submitting our own response following consultation with our members.
